The two aspects of time
What is time? What does it mean to be timeless? How often have you heard a sentence ”ohhh, this or that is so timeless!” What does that exactly mean? We are spending time in trying to grasp that, which is timeless, so it is important to understand what we mean by time. I think it is possible to be free of time.
Our lives are mostly spent in time – time, not in the sense of chronological sequence, of seconds, minutes, hours… but in the sense of psychological memory. That is called the psychological time, which is totally different than chronological time. Our minds are consisted of many yesterdays and the present is merely the passage of the past to the future. Where is the now? As I’m sitting here on an airport writing this text I see all kinds of people rushing from past to the future, almost running trying to get there… in time. Only to wait for the next thing to happen, becoming something, achieving this or that.
Memory is time. There is time as yesterday by the watch and yesterday by memory. Chronological time is always there, it would be absurd to resist it, otherwise you and I would miss our flights. But the question is this: is there really any time apart from chronological time? Obviously there is yesterday for the mind who thinks of it, but is there time apart from the mind? Without the foundation of thought there is no time.
Happiness is not of yesterday; happiness is NOT the product of time. Happiness is always in the present timeless state. Not realising this, one can never be happy. Have you noticed when you are in ecstasy, a creative joy, in that moment there is no time. There is only the immediate present. The difficulty with most of us is that we have not the intention to understand, because we are afraid that, if we understood, it might bring about a revolutionary action in our life and therefore we resist. Fear. It’s the defence mechanism that is at work when we use time or and ideal as a means of changing ourselves, bringing about the transformation we desire. ”I’ll do it tomorrow… when I start this in a minute I will be free”. See? It is all about the future when is should be now, because it is always in the now. Has been and will be, forever.
A man who sees that time is not the way out of our difficulty and who is therefore free from the false, such a man naturally has the intention to understand; therefore his mind is quiet spontaneously, without compulsion, without practice. When the mind is still, not seeking any answer or any solution, neither resisting nor avoiding; only then you can be free of time.
Now it is “time” for me to enter the airplane and catch my flight, in the now. Regardless of what time the plane is departing it is always doing it in the now, as I am writing this text being free of time, resting in this timeless witnessing stillness, where true beauty arises, where there are no words, no thoughts, just this….
